I have been delivering tailored coffee sessions at our Roastery HQ to the public for nearly a year now. Through the pandemic, we realised there was an appetite for learning amongst our growing coffee community and once the restrictions lifted, we opened our doors.
It still surprises me that people not professionally incentivised or involved in the coffee industry would want to pay money to hang out with me for a few hours and learn about coffee. The conversations I have had with such a diverse range of audiences have been an absolute pleasure and a great insight into where I think specialty coffee could be in the coming years.
People are really starting to care about coffee quality and want to understand more about coffee’s complex journey.
My mission for these sessions is always to highlight the dedication and hard work that goes into producing specialty coffee whilst challenging some of the misconceptions that have developed from the commoditisation of the industry.
I realise that as Specialty Coffee Roasters we are the bridge that connects the consumer to the producer, our influence on this new era of coffee consumers is something I am constantly reminded of in these sessions. Challenging myself to make sure that I am providing accurate information is always at the forefront of my mind and something I work very hard on.
The conversations are certainly changing and we need to be mindful of where they are heading. We can have fun along the way but we need to make sure we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past. Coffee is such a powerful connector of people and quality needs to remain the focus. I would like to start expanding these sessions in the future and a coffee cupping club is definitely on the agenda for the near future.
Lots to discuss for sure.
Cheers
Burts.
